Ways to Drive More Traffic to Your Site with Google AdSense

AdSense is one of the most popular ads formats on the Internet today, with millions of websites leveraging it to earn money from their content. However, some sites neglect the great potential that AdSense has for driving traffic back to their site, instead of focusing solely on maximizing revenue. Here are six simple ways you can drive more traffic to your site using AdSense.

1. Place AdSense ads on pages that drive traffic back to your site

One of the easiest ways to make money with AdSense is by placing ads on pages that drive people back to your site. For example, if you notice that your Facebook page is generating lots of traffic, then you can place AdSense ads on your Facebook page. Facebook is obviously a huge traffic source, and some clever SEO can drive you the most clicks possible. 

Secondly, if you notice in the search engines that some pages of your site are earning a lot of traffic, then you can also place ads on pages that drive people back to your site. For example, let's say you notice that some key pages on your site are heavily trafficked. Therefore, you can place AdSense ads on pages that bring in a very high percentage of your website's visitors. Let's say that many of these visitors are interested in video content. Although there are lots of videos on YouTube, you could get even more targeted traffic if you targeted YouTube's internal search in your Ad and supported your ads to only show for a very small number of videos. 

Finally, if you notice that some pages on your site are getting a lot of activity from search engines, then you can also place ads on pages that bring in a lot of search engine traffic. Here is another example... You've noticed that some pages on your website rank very highly for generic keywords. These pages would be ideal to run ads on and earn a lot of revenue. Why pay for traffic to these pages if you can just get more from your visitors? Another great way to drive more traffic back to your site is through AdSense featured snippets. You can use this form of featured snippet advertising to drive traffic directly to your site. Using this form of advertising as an example, let's imagine that you own a website that has a big selection of products.

2. Use different formats and sizes of AdSense ads for maximum impact

Unfortunately, you will need to get a few things published before your site will really be able to see the potential of AdSense. You'll need a domain name with a high AdSense clickthrough rate (CTR) if you want your site to be eligible. You'll also obviously need a relatively high-quality page to submit to the program, but there are some ways to get there, too.

Analytics & Tracking

First, make sure you're tracking your AdSense ads on Google's AdWords account. If you don't already have a Google account, just create one and follow these instructions. Once your campaign has been automated and you've moved the AdSense changes to a personal profile, you'll need to add GA tracking. Once you've verified (or unverified) your account, the next thing you'll want to do is find out where your ads are performing best. This has two aspects—the actual ads you're running and your impression count from the search engines. Since your main goal with AdSense is to get more page views on your site, clicking on the ads is the best way to do that.

To find your impression count, go into the Analytics section of your AdWords account, select Search Traffic > Search, then navigate down to AdWords At the bottom of the AdWords report, you'll find an impression column. Using this column, you can determine where your AdSense ads are showing up the most. In the example below, I go to Search > Keyword, select "view source," and launch the AdWords keyword tool. Then scroll down to the bottom and find your AdSense page. In this case, I can pull down to the bottom of the 5th page of results, drill down to the 1st page, and get an actual impression count.

3. Place AdSense ads on related sites to bring more traffic to your site

Google AdSense is a great way to make money from your site. The program places ads on your site, and you get paid when visitors click on the ads. If you can find sites related to your blog or niche, you can place ads on those sites, too. A few websites might want to give YOU the ad revenue, rather than charging you. How Traffic IS CUT, Unfortunately, there's something called Negative SEO that folks tend to forget about. 

Negative SEO occurs when someone incorrectly places links or text on your site or publishes content (such as blog posts) that falsely suggests that your site or the site you link to has engaged in spam, fraud, or negative practices. In other words, negative SEO attempts to harm your site in some way. Some spammers even go as far as to leave defamatory or harmful messages on your site, or on a hosting company's server. If you get reports of a negative SEO attack, respond quickly and place the proper legal notices on your site immediately. If you have a history of deleting negative SEO attacks, consider taking a page out of the article site deletion playbook (and revealing WhoIs information about you and your site in the comments).

Cases can get bad enough that it's worthwhile for webmasters or their web host to pursue partial or complete removal of the offending site from the web's index, thereby avoiding further revenue loss. Adsense ads on a site that resorts to reputation management and other irresponsible SEO techniques might indicate something suspicious, but they don't have to be a tremendous red flag. Many webspam flaws occur because a webmaster uses keyword stuffing or uses very scrappy software to write great content.

But oftentimes, our companies completely neglect the opportunity to make the experience of connecting with advertisers even easier. So here are six simple, scalable ways to maximize traffic on your AdSense-targeted site. Find out what drives engagement. Many sites, including Moz, don’t see the importance of engagement when it comes to driving traffic back to their site. Sure, people are likely to be drawn to your site if they’ve experienced something relevant, something interesting, something they can relate to. But how often do people get that trigger word, that chance to connect with your site and engage in a meaningful way?
